<image:title>About Us - About Us</image:title>
<image:caption>Small Gods is a brewing project based in Auckland, New Zealand dedicated to collaborative, historical and experimental brewing. Named in honour of the yeasts who make our beer possible and the inimitable Terry Pratchett. The Small Gods team (Luke & Matt) aim to keep history alive by bringing ancient beer styles and fascinating legends to light with a modern twist. Our unique approach to brewing highlights the rare, weird and wonderful styles that are often left by the wayside and embraces new and experimental techniques and ingredients. Our beers are also inspired by interesting stories from history and mythology with the names and themes of our beers showcasing these stories. These themes are translated into stunning art in partnership with the fantastic artists and designers who make our packaging possible. Small Gods brew all around New Zealand with our friends at fantastic breweries who oblige us by collaborating on brewing the experimental and not-commercially-viable styles they're interested in.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Small Gods X Whistling Sisters BEER // With Small Gods' innovative approach to flavour, Padmal's experience of brewing Belgian styles and Logan's commitment to the Maillard process and making Candi sugar, Mother Maiden Crone was always going to be a winner. In Belgium beers lower than 8% are referred to as 'sports drinks' and Tripels are one of the most popular styles. The name refers to the amount of pilsner malt used in the brew - they use thrice the amount of a Table Beer resulting in triple the alcohol and rich flavours. Mother Maiden Crone was brewed the traditional way using hand made Candi sugar (a sucrose that has undergone a Maillard reaction) for flavour, to elevate the ABV and result in a dry finish. The spicy notes of the yeast are enhanced by the addition of coriander and a very delicate helping of black, white and pink peppercorns. It's big and complex yet somehow also classy and more-ish. COLLABORATOR // Whistling Sisters Russel & Elwyn Scott have been stalwarts of the Wellington hospitality industry since the 1980’s when they created The Backbencher pub (along with Wellington’s most fun political party). Whistling Sisters honours their daughter Karen Louisa with profits going to a foundation in her name to support research into advanced breast cancer. The Scott’s partner is Bede who had spent many years at Lion Nathan where he witnessed first hand the changing tastes moving away from bland, soulless macro beer toward more refined and flavoursome brews. Head brewer is Padmal, a qualified Master Brewer who has brewed in Sri Lanka, Germany, Japan, India & Australia. He is ably supported by Logan, an extremely hard working and enthusiastic young brewer. <image:title>Black Narcissus - Black Narcissus 12.5% Mumme Ale</image:title>
<image:caption>Small Gods X Double Vision BEER // On Monday 22nd April 1661 Samuel Peyps and his pal Sir Thomas Batten had a lovely time watching the great royal procession for Charles II's coronation in London. They celebrated by heading to a Mum-house and getting 'very merry' on bowls of 'fattening Mum'. At least as early as 1390 Mumme was the beer of choice in Braunschweig, Germany. Drinkers described the pitch black drink as extremely bitter, so thick you'd need a knife and "strong as six horses, coach and all". It is thought that Mumme was the first beer in Germany to be made with hops rather than other botanicals. As the decades passed, various versions emerged - Stadtmumme (town mum) was designed for everyday consumption and distinguished by it's inferior strength from the potent Shiffmumme (ship mum) designed for export. As the English embraced the style, they tinkered and incorporated all manner of botanicals into recipes that were close guarded secrets. Fir branches, pennyroyal, bruised barberries and 'ten new-laid eggs unbroken' are just some of the ingredients we encountered while researching recipes and trying to figure out what a bushel is. Black Narcissus is a modern interpretation of a style nobody has drunk in hundreds of years. The brew incorporates cardamon pods and blessed thistle to give it a unique herbal, savoury flavour. The maltbill was huge to result in a 12.5% beer and includes wheat and oats for mouthfeel. The wort was boiled for around 4 hours, reducing the volume by a third and creating an even thicker beer. We have no idea how accurate it is to the Mummes of old but we're pretty happy with it AWARDS // Gold Medal 2019 Brewer’s Guild Awards Silver Medal 2021 Brewer’s Guild Awards COLLABORATORS // Double Vision Double Vision are Evarn, Warren, Mario & Harry. A bunch of Wellington based mates whose enthusiasm for home brewing became more than a hobby when they officially launched in July 2016. Before then, their 100L pilot brewery had been working overtime as their bar manager friends started to insist they ramp up production so they could sell DVB beers in their bars. By day the foursome were engineers and graphic designers but by night (as well as evenings, weekends and early mornings) they become Double Vision. They draw influence from a wide variety of beer cultures with Warren being involved with the Colorado beer scene and Evarn having fallen in love with European styles while living in Holland. They recently opened their brewery and bar in Park Road, Wellington where they host food trucks and live music every weekend. <image:caption>Small Gods X Baylands BEER // The lemon. Simultaneously exotic and commonplace. Its origin and parentage are unknown but humans have cultivated and prized this unique citrus for two millennia in medicine, decoration, religion and the kitchen. The concept behind this beer was to showcase that most marvellous fruit alongside complimentary Lemongrass hops atop a very light malt profile. Alongside lashings of lemon juice, we added oats and wheat to the pilsner malt to give the beer a full, soft mouthfeel without adding malt flavours. Consider The Common Lemon has low bitterness but with some pithy tart zesty notes. We think it's a refreshing, quaffable and rather unique ale. COLLABORATOR // Baylands. After 22 years working in IT, Aidan decided to follow his passion for beer and started brewing commercially in his double garage on Baylands Drive. He partnered up with with his friend (and former colleague) Steve and the rest is history. From their start in 2012, their beers quickly gained a following and with more than a few awards. In the smoke and ruin of Gehenna he rises, revelling in the frailty of our insipid mortality. His maw stretches to the sky, seeking blood. Repent. The end times come and his thirst will not be slaked. Satan Satan Satan is a Gunpowder Bock, a classic German strong dark lager style, sacrilegiously perverted with the three classic ingredients of traditional Black Powder - Sulphur, Saltpetre and Carbon. With a clean, vibrant malt profile supported by subtle spice, a savoury note and a moreish dry finish it’s a unique beer. It was lagered for an extended period to ensure clarity of flavour and a dry finish. This malty lager is surprisingly sessionable with the gunpowder adding a touch of complexity - charred smoke, brimstone and spicy mineral notes. <image:title>Enter Sandman - Enter Sandman - Session Pastry Stout - 3.5%</image:title>
<image:caption>Small Gods X Choice Bros BEER // Sweet pastry stouts are pretty popular right now but they're generally on the very boozy side. When we came up with the idea of brewing a session version for summertime, Choice Bros. were the obvious choice to collaborate with. Their beer names are inspired by music and ours nod toward mythology and fantasy literature so we decided on the name Enter Sandman to embrace both and give us a starting point for a beer that would include lots of different sand-like ingredients including cocoa, milo, weetbix, brown sugar, dehydrated raspberries, lactose and maltodextrin. It's no mean feat brewing a flavour-packed yet light beer at just 3.5% so we worked with dark wheat and chocolate malt to give the beer some roundness and played with the water chemistry, adding calcium chloride for mouthfeel and calcium chloride to reduce harsh bitterness. The initial hit with lots of raspberries before you settle in to a dessert of a beer that's on the lighter side and somewhat reminiscent of English session stouts. BREWERIES // Choice Bros sprung into life around 5 years ago as a small brewpub in a former boxing gym in central Wellington with a passion for David Bowie records and ignoring the Reinheitsgebot beer purity law. With their unique approach to flavour. Choice beers have been known to incorporate all manner of unusual ingredients including fennel, pinot noir must, rice noodles, galangal, yoghurt and many more. They took out the top 3 spots at Beervana last year with a series of milkshake inspired stouts. Head brewer Brayden recently relocated about 500m to brew at Fork & Brewer, handing the baton to the very talented Manaia and we're very excited to see what direction he will take the beers in. <image:caption>Small Gods X Maltkult BEER // Hurled from Heaven, they fell like lightning. For 9 days and 9 nights they fell headlong through Chaos. Vanquished rebel angels, their boasts broken and majesty brought low. Beauty defiled as they descended from light to darkness. A grim bottomless abyss made of shadow. Hell at last, yawning, received them whole, and on them closed. Satan’s rival kingdom forged. The Fall is the second beer in our Satan trilogy, following on from Satan Satan Satan. A Belgian Dubbel, a complex, rich, malty traditional ale. The Dubbel sits in the pantheon of traditional Belgian ales and is brewed with twice the amount of malt that you would usually find in an Abbey Single, hence the name. Dubbels are darker in colour than their Single and Tripel counterparts with rich flavours of dried fruit, toffee, biscuit and spice. This version was brewed with copious amounts of dried fig to symbolise Satan's temptation of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. It was added to reinforce the natural rich fruit character with added depth and complexity. The Fall is sweet through the mid palate but finishing dry and clean to enhance the drinkability. <image:caption>Small Gods X Boatrocker BEER // When Boatrocker decided to hop the Tasman for Wellington's Beervana Festival in August, the Small Gods immediately got on the phone to line up a collaboration brew. Due to Covid, they weren't able to leave Melbourne and it ended up being a remote collaboration. An early phone call revealed a shared love of grapefruit IPAs so they set about crafting a recipe where the citrus would work in perfect harmony with the hops. Elvish Juice is a pretty resinous West Coast IPA with assertive hoppiness, a light body and a bitter dry finish that keeps you coming back for more. The citrussy Centennial, Citra & Strata hops perfectly complement the zest from a wheelbarrow-load of grapefruit harvested by the Small Gods team in Auckland. It makes use of the Dip Hopping technique to boost pleasant hop flavours. <image:caption>Small Gods X Zeelandt BEER // Once upon a time all beers tasted a little smokey. Malted grains were kilned over wood fires until the introduction of smoke-less coke a century or two ago which meant maltsters could roast non-smokey pale malts and beers like Bitter and Pilsner were born. The brewers of Bamburg, Bavaria saw no need to change - they liked the wonderfully complex flavours imparted from beechwood smoke. And so did their customers. Brünhilde's Fate is an homage to those great brewers and Luke & Christopher chose to use another archaic practise by doing a decoction mash. That is basically a slow and laborious way of steadily heating the wort in steps to result in a beer with more layers of sweet complexity that compliment the smoke notes. It was then lagered (stored at a cold temperature) for an extended period to result in a flavour packed unique beer with a crisp dry finish that we'd be very happy to drink again and again. Aim for a large head when pouring - around 1/4 of the height of the glass is traditional to release optimal aroma as you drink. COLLABORATOR // Brewing is in Christopher Barber's blood. His Hawke's Bay brewery, Zeelandt, opened in 2012 around 125 years after his great great grandfather opened a brewery near Christchurch. Christopher honed his skills working at St Austell Brewery in Cornwall before returning to New Zealand to brew at Hallertau. The brewery's name (pronounced zay-land) reflects the inspiration taken from classic European styles with a distinctly New Zealand twist. Their brewery bar is under construction and will be ready for you to visit in Summer. <image:caption>Small Gods X Moon Dog He knows when you’re awake. Until you settle in for your long nap, draw down the sash and close the shutters he waits patiently. You never see him sneak into your living room to drink the brandy and eat the cookies left by the fireplace, nevertheless, in the morning they’re gone. Kris Kringle has dashed away like the down of a thistle, leaving behind the remnants his of conspicuous consumption. The sweet pile of presents lifts your spirits enough to balance out the bitter job of cleaning his footprints out of the carpet. Brewed in collaboration with our good friends at Moon Dog this is a Christmas Pudding Barley Wine. Be transported to late nights at a dark English Christmas table where the fire from a brandy-soaked pudding illuminates the feast, waiting to be piled high with lashings of brandy butter. Kris Kringle is brewed with Raisins, Currants, Candied Peel, Brandy, Nutmeg and Star Anise. A richly spiced and fruity beer with a deceptively light tough to the malt base. The flavour is a layered melange of spicy and herbal notes backed up by an assertive bitterness and long, lingering alcohol warmth.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Small Gods X Maltkult BEER // Rent from the right hand of God, Lucifer rages. Downcast and despairing he flees. Cohorts of his divine compatriots abandon paradise alongside the rebel angel to reach out for a new nirvana. They find only the eternal agony of the pit. Betrayed and laid low the Morningstar's share of heaven's strength haunt humanity. Their twisted visages terrorise the souls of men, sapping their will. Despair as baying they return, bound for rack and ruin, heralding humanity's end. Every year the 'angel's share' evaporates from whiskey barrels up the the heavens, just as Lucifer's share of rebel angels were cast out of paradise. This beer is a beefed up strong Scotch Ale brewed with heaps of speciality malts. Complex sweet layered flavours of caramel and biscuit accompany nuttiness and a light touch of smoke. It was aged on oak to enhance the whisky impression with smooth vanilla on the nose. Finally, it was fortified with a prodigious amount of Speyside whisky. Lucifer's Share is designed to be sipped slowly and savoured. It will continue to change and improve with age so we'd recommend grabbing a couple of cans to stash away for a few years. <image:title>3 On A Match - Three On A Match - Belgian Amber Ale - 7%</image:title>
<image:caption>Small Gods X 8 Wired In the muddy trenches of Flanders fields during WW1 there was an abundance of cigarettes but matches were limited and needed to be shared. Behind the barbed wire there was a superstition that it was death to be the third man on the match. When the first soldier lit his cigarette, the enemy would see the light; when the second soldier lit his cigarette from the same match, the enemy would take aim at the target; and when the third soldier lit his cigarette from the match, the enemy would fire. This Belgian Amber ale was inspired by Belgian battlefields. Brewed with our good friends at 8 Wired it's a modern take on a classic style. With dates and palm sugar added for extra complexity and depth of flavour. Brewed with 8 Wired, one of New Zealand's most highly regarded breweries. Inspired by the Kiwi can-do mentality to challenge the masses that beer is no longer “just beer”. Creating unique brews and ingenuity in flavour .</image:caption>

<image:title>Reflection of Narcissus - Reflection of Narcissus - Mumme Ale - 11.5%</image:title>
<image:caption>Small Gods X Double Vision BEER // Reflection Of Narcissus is a reprise of the first ever Small Gods collaboration brew from 2 years ago - Black Narcissus - which won Gold at the Brewer's Guild Awards. The recipe is almost the same with the botanicals being swapped out. On Monday 22nd April 1661 Samuel Peyps and his pal Sir Thomas Batten had a lovely time watching the great royal procession for Charles II's coronation in London. Reflection of Narcissus is a modern interpretation of a style forgotten about for hundreds of years. The brew incorporates wormwood and thyme to give it a unique herbal, savoury flavour. The maltbill was huge to result in an 11.5% beer and includes wheat and oats for mouthfeel. The wort was boiled for around 4 hours, reducing the volume by a third and creating an even thicker beer. We have no idea how accurate it is to the Mummes of old but we're pretty happy with it AWARDS // Bronze Medal - Brewers Guild Awards 2021 COLLABORATOR // Double Vision are Evarn, Warren, Mario & Harry. <image:caption>Small Gods X Molly Rose He sees you when you’re sleeping. The old man watches from the foot of the bed, bedecked in chimney-stained red and white, judging and weighing the value of your soul. Normally you’d call it home invasion when someone breaks into your house like that. I guess the fact that he’s bearing gifts grants a certain amount of leniency. Have you been good though? What if you’re found wanting? You might reach into your stocking to find your hands tarnished with ashes and soot, the weight of your sins bearing down upon you. St Nicholas’ judgment laid before you. But if you’ve been nice, and proven yourself worthy, this can of joy is for you. Brewed in collaboration with our mate Nic Sandery at Molly Rose brewing this is a Christmas Cake Imperial Stout. Reminiscent of a traditional Jamaican Black cake, we’ve loaded up this beer with Golden Syrup, Candied Peel, Dark Rum, Port, Vanilla, Cinnamon, Allspice and Tonka Beans. We employed a massive double mash technique to cram in as much flavour and richness as possible. Layers of pungent spice and sticky dark fruit mingle with a boozy molasses note from the Rum and Golden Syrup, all laid over a nutty and chocolatey malt base packed with Rye, Oats, Wheat, Chocolate, Crystal and Caramel malts.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Small Gods He knows if you’ve been bad or good. It’s kind of creepy actually, if you think about it. He’s in your house, poking around, looking at your stuff. He might have a twinkle in his eye, merry dimples and shake when he laughs like a bowlful of jelly but don’t let appearances fool you. He knows exactly what you asked for, even if you didn’t write him a letter and he has a comprehensive list of your activities. Where is he getting his information? Does he work at Google, Facebook or the GCSB? And anyway, how did he get in my house? I don’t even have a chimney! It’s all deeply suspicious if you ask me. But who cares? He’s Santa and that means you get free stuff…don’t ask questions. Santa Santa Santa is the first Small Gods beer brewed without any collaborators, which is an exciting milestone for us. Brewed to emulate a classic Christmas Chocolate Coconut Snowball, this Imperial Stout is loaded with irresponsible amounts of Cocoa, Coconut, Vanilla and White Rum. Featuring a ridiculous base of 8 different malts and boiled for 5 hours, Santa Santa Santa is a decadently sweet, rich, layered chocolatey beer with beautifully integrated coconut and a huge viscous mouthfeel. Despite appearances this beer is most definitely not suitable for kids.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sin Eater - Sin Eater - Dark Oat Mild - 4.5%</image:title>
<image:caption>Small Gods X North End BEER // Not so very long ago people people worried about their loved ones passing into the afterlife without being absolved of their sins. To counter this, most villages would have a resident 'sin eater' who would stand over the departed while consuming bread and ale to absorb their sin. The last sin eater died in 1906 in Shropshire, the county from which Small Gods' Luke hails. That ale was mild - once the most popular beer style in all England. The milds of the 16th Century were any beer that was served fresh and young. Over the years the style transformed to be the easy drinking counter to the more highly hopped 'bitter' style as a truly sessionable beer. Milds quickly fell in popularity 50 years ago in the wake of lager and bitter and have been regarded by many as extremely unfashionable ever since. We reckon a mild is a thing of beauty - like a good cup of tea, the drinker can revel in its magnificence or simply throw a few back without it being the focus of attention. This recipe is inspired by the milds brewed during World War II that incorporated oats to make up for ingredient shortages. The oats add body and the perception that the beer is 'bigger' that it is. We also amped up the abv slightly and increased the Kent Goldings hops to suit modern palates. Sin Eater is biscuit-y, nutty quaffable liquid bread. BREWERIES // North End. After a couple of years con tract brewing at friends' breweries, in 2015 North End completed the construction of their own brewery in Waikanae and haven't looked back. Not long after the brewery was joined by a tap-room and restaurant, Salt & Wood, making the Kapiti Coast a real destination for fans of good beer and food. The other two North End partners were formerly a waiter and a chef and, as Kieran is a former cheesemonger, they are especially interested in food friendly beers with a gastronomic character. North End take inspiration from historic and unusual styles and we aren't expecting to see a Hazy IPA from them anytime soon. <image:title>Galahad - Galahad - Table Beer 3.2%</image:title>
<image:caption>Small Gods The most exalted of the knights at King Arthur’s round table, Galahad alone proved worthy of the Holy Grail. With a peerless purity of heart and deed he journeyed to Camelot to serve at his king’s side. Besting the noble Sir Lancelot he proved himself the finest swordsman in the land and was duly knighted, taking his prophesied place at the round table. Sir Galahad then drew forth the sword in the stone, signalling to Arthur’s knights that the time had come to set out on their grail quest. Most of the knights ventured out alone, seeking glory. Sir Galahad however chose to venture forth alongside his compatriots Sir Bors the Younger and Sir Percival to fulfil his destiny. After a long and storied expedition, they discovered the mystical castle of Corbenic, the resting place of the holy grail. Having demonstrated his faith, Sir Galahad was granted the quest to return the grail to its resting place. On his return journey he was visited by Joseph of Arimathea and in his rapture requested to die. Thus his soul was ushered into heaven at Joseph’s side, borne aloft by a choir of angels, leaving his mortal vessel to the tender care of Bors and Percival. Galahad is a table beer. A pure and peerless style perfectly designed to showcase beer’s fundamental beauty. A fluffy and balanced base of Pilsner, Wheat, Crystal and Vienna malts supports a delicate and floral Belgian yeast character with a soft touch of rounded fruity British and US hops seamlessly mingling to create a light, refreshing and characterful beer. A sessionable 3.2% ABV is elevated by a medium body and bright carbonation. Do you seek the Grail?</image:caption>

<image:caption>Small Gods The Chupacabra stalks sinuously through the pale sands of the Chihuahuan desert, seeking prey. The arid dunes offer little succour beyond meagre sprays of cactus flower and the occasional skittering lizard. Poor sustenance for the raging thirst of this fearsome reptilian stalker. Teeth glisten, bright in the frosty Mexican moonlight as its target comes into view, listless and bleating. Cautiously it approaches, unobserved and slavering. The first the hapless goat knows of the Chupacabra’s predatory pounce is the feeling of fangs sinking swiftly into its tender flank. Its life’s blood is sucked away in rapid gulps. A desiccated husk is all that remains. The Chupacabra wends its way onwards, its ceaseless thirst unquenched. Chupacabra is an IPA inspired by cold nights in the Mexican desert. An ultra-pale pilsner malt base with a healthy addition of malted corn provides a crisp and clean platform to allow the carefully selected blend of uniquely characterful Neomexicanus hops to sing. Zappa, El Dorado and Talus burst with bright flavours of passionfruit, apricot, watermelon, mint and tropical fruits. Chupacabra is fermented with a Lager yeast and cold conditioned to enhance the assertive, old-school bitterness (remember the IBU arms race?). This is a punchy, bitter, moreish, and refreshing IPA designed to quench the most insatiable thirst.</image:caption>

He used his lyre in a forlorn attempt to rescue his wife Eurydice from the underworld and was the harpist and companion of Jason and the Argonauts whom he saved from the Sirens with his beautiful music. When Orpheus finally passed away his Lyre was hurled into a river. Agnostos Theos is a collaboration by the wild and Lo-Fi wine specialists at New Plymouth's Known Unknown wine. <image:caption>Small Gods X Satya In the dark days of British colonial rule in India, the British East India Company proliferated the drinking of tea throughout the subcontinent. This symbol of Englishness came with significant classist cultural etiquette around how it should be drunk and served, enforced by inspectors from the Indian Tea Association. In the early 20th century the Chaiwallas rebelled again the strictures of their oppressors and made the drink their own with the addition of rich spices. Despite the East India Company’s attempt to quash this sedition, Masala Chai, a richly spiced milky tea, spread throughout Asia and is now enjoyed around the world in a dazzling array of varieties featuring a cornucopia of spices. Chai Rebellion is a beer inspired by Masala Chai and brewed in collaboration with hospitality legend Sammy Akuthota, proprietor of Auckland’s Satya Chai Lounge. This white stout is thick, rich and creamy with layers of spice from generous additions of Ginger, Cardamom and Mace. This is backed up by sweetness from the addition of Lactose while dry CTC Black Tea adds authentic tea character with a light tannic bitterness to balance.</image:caption>

<image:title>Bedevere - Bedevere - Table Beer - 3.2%</image:title>
<image:caption>Small Gods X Whistling Sisters Sir Bedevere was one of King Arthur’s most trusted companions at the Round Table. When the legendary ruler was mortally wounded in battle at Camlann he bequeathed his holy sword, Excalibur, to Bedevere with instructions to return it to the Lady of the Lake from whom he received the famous blade. Upon arriving at the shores of the lake, Bedevere found himself unable to discard such a sacred relic and hid the weapon instead and returned to the dying Arthur’s side. His falsehood however, was discovered. Thoroughly reprimanded for his lies he returned to the lake in shame and cast away Excalibur as his liege commanded. As the sword fell, an arm clad in shimmering white samite arose from the water as the Lady of the Lake snatched it from the air before dragging it to its final resting place beneath the surface. Bedevere is a Table Beer, brewed in collaboration with the team at Wellington’s Whistling Sisters Brewery. This light, bright, complex and sessionable ale features citrusy and zesty modern German hops, Ariana and Callista, which deliver a refreshing punch of lemon, tangerine, peach and jasmine. This delicate fruit character floats over a light and fresh base of Pilsner, Wheat and Vienna malts and is underpinned by a peppery yeast character. Gloriously drinkable and invigoratingly interesting.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Small Gods X Freestyle X Gladfield X Froth From dusk till dawn, in the freezing cold and the blazing heat, the reaper man works tirelessly. In the fields of Canterbury the crops are coaxed from seed to sack, through malting floor and kiln to bring us the freshest, most characterful malt. In the towering hop gardens of Nelson, stringers work high in the air to provide fruitful pathways for the bines to climb, while on the ground the cones are rubbed and sniffed by experts to select harvest dates with care. In a meticulous Wellington lab, yeast wranglers strive to provide the optimum conditions for their yeast with applications of sugar and oxygen. If not for the care of the Reaper Man, there would be no harvest, and your glass would be empty, so raise it up in salute. This NZ Pale Ale exists thanks to the care of dozens of people. From fields, gardens, kilns and vats our growers, pickers, fermenters, stringers, scientists and maltsters work hard to deliver the highest quality NZ ingredients. Gladfield American Ale malt uses Autumn Barley, kilned for a clean, vibrant base, paired with Supernova, a malt made with lightly roasted winter barley to impart a nutty, toasted character and a hint of sweetness. From Nelson’s Freestlye Hops come new season Motueka Hops. Carefully chosen from late in the harvest to bring out rich, tropical papaya character. From their Wellington Lab, Froth have nurtured a culture of their Buddy ale yeast for a clean ferment leaving just enough residual sugar to provide a rounded smooth finish.</image:caption>

Your footfalls crunch on virgin snow as you raise your head to take in your reward, the promised exaltation of an infinite horizon and the heady rush of altitude. Only a misty white expanse greets you, bereft of depth and wonder. Thick and cloying clouds hug the ridges and cliffs like a heavy blanket, quashing your triumph. You turn to see the stalking shadow of your disappointment looming before you. The silhouette of your Brocken Spectre stretches across the sullen sky, its twisted head haloed in the chromatic brilliance of your stolen glory. Brocken Spectre is a heavily fruited Imperial Sour brewed with the incredible team at Queenstown’s Altitude Brewery. Thick and juicy with abundant tropical notes from the huge additions of pureed Lychee and Passionfruit. A punchy tartness is balanced with body and sweetness from the addition of milk sugar and rounded out with a savoury edge from a generous dose of salt, allowing the fruit flavour to sing. All this sits atop a hearty 9% ABV to warm your heart on a cold Queenstown night.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Small Gods X Freestyle X Gladfield X Froth From the first sprouting of a seed in the pre-dawn light to the verdant bounty of garden laden with hop cones lit by the ruddy glow of the setting sun, the harvest strives. Barley stalks stretch and sway in the gentle breeze of a late spring afternoon and creeping tendrils of ambitious hop bines cling tight to strings as they reach greedily towards the light as the harvest hungers. Smaller than the eye can see, industrious yeast cells grow and replicate as they hunt out new sources of food and the harvest hopes. But what can the harvest hope for? To create this NZ Pilsner, we went right to the source, collaborating with three incredible local ingredients producers to showcase the bounty of the NZ harvest. Gladfield Pilsner Malt grown in the barley fields of Canterbury takes plump spring barley, lightly kilned for a clean, crisp body and pale straw colour. From Nelson’s Freestlye Hops come our new season Motueka Hops. Hand selected by the team from early in the harvest when this New Zealand hop showcases a bright and verdant lime character. Out of their Lab in Wellington Froth Yeast cultivated a large pitch of their Krisp lager yeast to ferment the beer to a crisp and bright finish after long and patient lagering. The result is a crisp, refreshing, vibrant NZ Pilsner bursting with citrus aromas with a rounded malt character and a dry finish. It’s everything the harvest hopes for.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Small Gods X Heyday Only the briefest flash of a red cockscomb gives away Basabasa as it picks its way through the shadows of a mountain village. Silence grips the night, only interrupted by swaying sprays of rattling bamboo as they shift in the cool wind. Doors creak and windows rattle as the locals, hidden in their homes, try to catch a glimpse of the furtive fowl. Suddenly an eerie rustling echoes out as Basabasa flaps its wings and lets out a burst of cold ghost fire, illuminating the chill night. As the afterglow fades from fearful eyes, darkness and silence surge softly back and the figure is gone. Was it ever really there? Basabasa is a Japanese Cold IPA. Brewed with a bright and crisp Japanese Rice Lager base of Pilsner malt, Puffed Rice, Flaked Rice and Rice Syrup. This clean platform allows Sorachi Ace hops to sing with a complex herbal character backed up by supporting citrus notes from the addition of Motueka and Cryo Lemondrop. This was fermented with a Lager yeast and cold conditioned for an extended period to enhance the crisp and bitter finish.</image:caption>

A rich and toasty base of 8 different malts was mashed with absurd amounts of house roasted pumpkin, brown sugar and cacao husks and then subjected to a criminally long boil to add body and rich caramel notes. We then dosed the beer with a carefully blended Pumpkin Spice mix of Cinnamon, Clove, Allspice, Ginger and Nutmeg. This is a light, refreshing, dry, sparkling ale with a clean fruity peach character. We took a lean and light base of pilsner, ale and wheat malts with added generous additions of both peach juice and peach puree. Jupiter however was a god of insatiable appetites. His many and varied indiscretions would have brought great shame to his faithful wife had he not taken steps to hide them. <image:caption>Small Gods As the pains of the world fade away your eyes flicker back open on an empty hall. A doorway stands at one end, its complex and ornate filigree surrounds chipped and worn with the gentle wear of passing aeons. The yawning portal stands open and within you glimpse a featureless void offering the inviting darkness of a peaceful oblivion. Hesitant, you turn 180 degrees. Behind you stands a starkly different door, trimmed in knife-sharp lines of shining steel. The antiseptic white glow from beyond calls out with a disquieting offer of eternal bliss. Here beside you, Janus appears, both faces implacable and stern. His single word breaks the echoing silence. “Choose.” The American Amber Ale is a modern take on a classic American style. Boiled for 180 minutes to develop a bold and complex malt character and a deep, bright amber hue. On the nose Idaho 7 and Cascade lend a distinctively fruity and floral quality to the beer with notes of pine and Turkish delight. On the palate Janus is full-bodied and richly layered with toasty malt character driven by the toffee and caramel flavours and a velvety mouthfeel that were coaxed out during the three-hour boil . This lends the beer a depth and complexity while also providing a firm backbone of sweetness that is perfectly balanced by a moderate hop bitterness and a deceptively dry finish.</image:caption>

An elephant from the holy land returned with crusaders and a polar bear was gifted by the king of Norway and allowed to fish in the Thames. Gifts from kings, sultans and emperors, the heraldic creatures delighted and horrified the populace who would bring dogs and cats to feed to the beasts. Another relic of a different age is the London Brown Porter. This light but characterful porter is brewed with a restrained selection of British malts and hopped with Bramling Cross. The beer opens with notes of dark rye bread and burnt toffee with chocolate and blackberry jam joining as the beer warms. A touch of roast on the back of palate leads to a dry and moreish finish</image:caption>

<image:title>Mordred - Mordred - 3.5% Dark Table Beer</image:title>
<image:caption>Small Gods Mordred was the black sheep among the knights at Arthur’s round table. As the bastard son of Arthur he was hidden from court and raised away from Camelot alongside his half brother Gawain. When Gawain’s chivalric deeds earned him a place at the round table, Mordred used this connection to gain one of the coveted seats for himself. Mordred gained a reputation among Arthur’s knights as a violent and uncouth womaniser, however this did not prevent the King from leaving him with charge of his domain when he left to campaign against the Romans. Upon Arthur’s departure Mordred attempted to seize both the kingdom and the Queen Guinevere as his own. Arthur, enraged, returned to face his errant bastard. The two did battle at Camlann and while Arthur slew Mordred in the field he received a mortal wound in return, thus marking the end of Arthur’s reign and the fall of Camelot. Mordred is a dark table beer. We took a complex base of 7 malts including Vienna, Oats, Wheat, Rye and Roasted Malts and fermented them with a Belgian yeast strain to add beautifully integrated notes of dark fruit and spice. This was then hopped with Strata to add bright and zesty top notes of strawberry, bubblegum, grapefruit and sage. The result is a sessionable and interesting dark beer which evolves in the glass revealing myriad complexities.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Tun - The Tun - 10% One Tonne Imperial Stout</image:title>
<image:caption>Small Gods Upon the quiet arrival of The Tun, the world seemed to fold into an eerie stillness. It hovered, a massive black cube with edges that seemed to stretch into the unknown, its gravity a silent call, pulling everything yet touching nothing. Its presence was an enigmatic whisper, a ghostly allure that seemed to come from the folds of another realm. The oddity of The Tun, with its silent, immeasurable immensity, was a mystery that beckoned, yet remained an untouched enigma, a vague silhouette in time, a question without answer. The Tun is an Imperial Stout. This huge and viscous dark beer features a robust base of 1000kg of New Zealand malts bringing an array of complex dark malt characters. As this decadent and indulgent beer warms in your glass it reveals elegant and integrated flavours of roast, dark chocolate, dark fruit, burnt toffee, caramel, toasted rye bread, brown sugar and porridge. This is reinforced by a smooth and warming boozy finish and top notes of bramble and blackberry jam from a judicious addition of British hops.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Small Gods Panicked footfalls pound through low prickly brush on the edge of a vast and twisted forest, underscored by the desperate wails of a forlorn father. In the near distance the sound is mirrored by the cries of a stolen child which echo in a disorienting cacophony off the thick trunks of towering redwoods. Concealed behind the low scrub, the Pukwudgie skitters away with his mewling prize. Eerie shadows move across his grey skin as the light from the fire he carries dances in a twisted claw. Stumbling, the man follows until, rounding a dense thicket, the trap is sprung. Flaming arrows pierce his legs and belly and he falls, only to witness the rest of the clan descending, blood-slick claws glinting in the shifting firelight. Pukwudgie is Californian Double IPA. A base of Pilsner, Wheat and Gladiator Malts provides a clean and snappy backdrop for the hops to shine. We then dosed up the hot side with mash, boil and dry hop additions of Strata and Cryo El Dorado for a rounded bitterness. In the dry hop we doubled down with El Dorado, Cryo Strata and a Motueka Hop Kief to provide a zesty pop of citrus and stonefruit. The result is a punchy and assertive double IPA loaded with fruit character, a beautiful body rich with hop oils and a dry finish that keeps you coming back for more.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Small Gods In the depths of the Black Forest, just set back from the winding trail, sits a house. This house might seem peaceful at first glance. Nestled beneath the boughs of old growth oak and elm trees its thatched roof is mottled by the shifting shadows of a slow sunset. A trail of smoke winds lazily from the chimney carrying the foreign scent of enticing spices. A small wooden door sits slightly crooked in a wooden frame allowing a chink of warm light to spill out. It looks welcoming, idyllic even, as the last golden rays of the sun settle behind the horizon. Do not be fooled though, young one. For this is a Hexenhaus, and to cross its threshold is to give yourself over to the ministrations of a witch. What she will do, none can say. For when a curious, brave, or foolish, traveller such as yourself enters, they are never seen again. Hexenhaus is a Roggenbier. This traditional German style ale is brewed with a base of Vienna malt supported by 3 different varieties of Rye to provide a rich and complex malt profile featuring flavours of dark brown bread, light toffee and black pepper. This is supported by Hallertau Tradition hops to provide a grassy hop character and supporting bitterness. The result is a smooth and drinkable rye ale which abounds with chewy malt character and subtle spice.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Small Gods In a realm untouched by time, Eve meandered amidst the verdant allure of Eden. The serpent, a transient whisperer, beguiled her towards the forbidden tree where The Fruit Thereof hung like gems of ancient knowledge. With a trembling hand, she picked the forbidden fruit, its taste a melody of lost innocence that wove reality anew. As the naivety dissipated, she beheld the world with eyes unclouded yet laden with profound knowing. With delicate hands, she sewed fig leaves, concealing the newfound awareness, as the garden's gentle breezes carried the echoes of a bygone innocence. To brew this fresh and floral Saison we paired with our mates at Sailor’s Grave in the deep sou’east of Australia. A blend of Spelt, Wheat and Pilsner malts provides a fluffy and light malt base for a herbal and citrussy hop profile featuring Saaz, Cashmere and Sabro. After a warm ferment on Sailor’s Grave’s house yeast culture we loaded the fermenter with a fresh harvest of locally grown fig leaves to add a complex and aromatic coconut flavour. Carbonated to a spritzy finish this delightful saison is complex and light with bags of character.</image:caption>

Pouring a deep, ebony hue with a creamy head, the aroma is a symphony of ginger spice, molasses, and a hint of vanilla. On tasting, the stout envelops the palate with the richness of gingerbread straight from the oven – the warmth of ginger, cinnamon, and nutmeg is beautifully intertwined with a dark malt depth that suggests treacle and dark chocolate. The body is substantial, coating the mouth with a velvety texture that carries the spice through to a satisfyingly long finish. <image:title>The Arms Race - The Arms Race! 9.3% 100 IBU Double IPA</image:title>
<image:caption>Small Gods In the mid 20th century the birth of the nuclear age triggered an arms race the likes of which had never been seen before. From Los Alamos to Semipalatinsk scientists worked to craft atomic weapons that would wreak havok on their enemies, destroy their cities and cement the supremacy of those who wielded them. With successful tests on both sides of the iron curtain the terrifying capacity for violence ushered in an era of cold war tempered by the fear of mutually assured destruction. In the early 21st century the birth of the craft beer industry triggered an IPA arms race the likes of which had never been seen before. From London to Los Angeles brewers worked to craft beers that would wreak havok on their customers senses, destroy their palates and cement the supremacy of those who brewed them. With successful double IPAs being brewed around the world the terrifying capacity for bitterness ushered in an era of craft beer innovation tempered by the fear of bland and flavourless beer. This Double IPA has been brewed to celebrate the heady heights of the IBU arms race when clean and hoppy beers reached their logical conclusion. Brewed with a classic combination of Cryo Citra, Amarillo, Cascade and Centennial hops this beer delivers a massive, oily and resinous hop hit backed up by a huge and assertive bitterness that lingers on the palate. This bitterness is supported by a rounded malt character and enhanced by the caramelisation of a 2 hour boil.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Small Gods A tumultuous series of civil wars for the English throne known as The War of the Roses spanned decades from 1455 to 1487, pitting the houses of Lancaster and York against each other. The conclusion of this strife came with the ascent of the Tudor dynasty, initiated by Henry VII, a Lancastrian, marking the start of a period of renewed stability and prosperity. Across the UK, the Rose & Crown, a name proudly borne by hundreds of pubs, stands as a symbol of this historical unification and peace following a turbulent and bloody era. This modern take on the traditional Best Bitter brings modern British hops to the fore. We took a rich and biscuity malt base and laid down an assertive bittering addition of Admiral hops. This classic base was married with dry hop additions of newcomers First Gold and Harlequin to add notes of tangerine, marmalade and passionfruit.</image:caption>

<image:title>Throwing Hands - Throwing Hands - 5.2% Seefbier</image:title>
<image:caption>Small Gods Seefbier was once the beer of Antwerp until lagers and pilsners rendered it extinct. The art and name are rooted in the origin of Antwerp's name. Once upon a time, a giant named Druon Antigoon terrorised the area, demanding tolls from those crossing the river Scheldt. If they couldn't pay, he cut off their hands. A hero named Brabo defeated the giant, cut off his hand, and threw it into the river. The name "Antwerp" comes from "hand werpen," Dutch for "hand throwing." Seefbiers were popular in Antwerp since at least the 1600s but, like so many regional styles, was killed by the unstoppable progress of lagers and pilsners and the style became extinct. It is a cloudy golden blonde beer with big body and a unique silky mouthfeel from the inclusion of buckwheat alongside a little spice character from the rye malt and Hallertau Mittelfruh hops.</image:caption>

<image:title>Chuchuna - Chuchuna - 6% Cold IPA</image:title>
<image:caption>Small Gods Snow-blind and shivering a lone mountaineer frantically descends. Lost and disoriented, the only sound to keep his heavy breathing company is the soft crunch of his boots break the crust on knee-deep snow. Behind him a snaking blood trail from the frayed end of a violently severed rope tracks a red slash across the pristine white expanse. The Chuchuna has taken his partner, he can only hope that its hunger is sated. This Cold IPA was brewed with 100% Nelson Sauvin and a clean and bright pilsner malt. Fermented with a lager yeast this is an assertive beer with a crisp, fresh snap. Recipe: Sam Williamson</image:caption>

<image:title>Queen of the Meadow - Queen of the Meadow - 4.9% Bière de Pretemps</image:title>
<image:caption>Small Gods Born from the magic of flowers, the Queen of the Meadow rules over the wild meadows where her namesake, the meadowsweet, blooms in endless abundance. Radiant as dawn, she grants blessings of love and beauty to those who honour her. Yet, those who dare to pluck her sacred flowers without reverence risk falling into an eternal slumber, lulled by the sweet, heavy scent of her enchanted blooms. Brewed in spring and designed for dreamy summer days, this Bière de Printemps balances a soft malt base with the floral sweetness of meadowsweet. Expect delicate honeyed undertones, a subtle almond-like aroma, and a hint of cut grass herbal spice. Queen Of The Meadow is brightly sparkling, refreshing and very more-ish.</image:caption>

<image:title>Gargoyle - Gargoyle - 6.8% Old School West Coast IPA</image:title>
<image:caption>Small Gods Stone grinds on stone high above the sleeping city, sending a cascade of dust and grit down to the cathedral square below. The gentle glow of a full moon casts a menagerie of silhouettes across the grand steps in a disquieting tangle of horns, fangs, wings and tails. Shadowed by the gallery of grotesques atop the walls, a grey and sullen figure moves with inexorable purpose. With a crunch and a burst of feathers an unsuspecting wren is the Gargoyle’s latest victim, but it moves on, unsatisfied, seeking more substantial fare. This classically inspired West Coast IPA is reminiscent of a time when malt mattered and a bitter backbone was the key indicator of the style that turbo charged the craft beer revolution. Our interpretation uses traditional Cascade, Amarillo and Columbus hops to deliver a rounded flavour profile replete with grapefruit marmalade, pine and turkish delight. This traditional hop load gives the beer a smooth yet assertive and lingering bitterness which is backed up by a judicious touch of crystal and caramel malts to support with just the right amount of sweetness and body.</image:caption>

<image:title>Mr. Vodník - Mr. Vodník - 5% Polotmavý</image:title>
<image:caption>Small Gods x Black Sands It’s a peaceful afternoon by the shore. You sit in quiet contemplation as ripples in the sullen pondwater cast mesmeric reflections of the sun as it peeks shyly from behind steel-grey clouds . A damp, musty smell is the first indication that you’re not alone. The pungent aroma is trailed by gentle, shuffling footsteps as Mr. Vodník breaks your reverie. He’s an unusual fellow with sallow grey skin, clutching a lidded teacup tightly in a mottled and webbed hand. A pipe bearing years of careful use in its patina pokes out from behind a beard which is matted like beached seaweed and the smoke winds its way in shifting whorls to add to the deep brown stain on the brim of his odd hat. There is an enigmatic gleam in his eye as he arranges himself next to you and waits, almost companionably watching the water. The people of the town are familiar with him by now, and have taught all the local children know not to go swimming unsupervised lest their souls be added to his collection. So he waits, bored. It’s almost time for supper and the market is closed so you know there is only one thing to be done to keep him occupied, lest he start looking for souls more proactively. You take a pinch of your own tobacco and sprinkle it gently into the water. "Here is your tobacco, Mr. Vodník, now give me a fish." Mr Vodník is a full flavoured and complex Czech Amber Lager. A rounded base of Munich malt is supported by selected speciality malts to bring notes of brown toast and digestive biscuits with a slight ruby highlight. A touch of sweetness from the malt is offset by a clean and snappy pilsner style finish from the use of classic Saaz hops making it a delicious and easy drinking session beer. Na zdraví!</image:caption>
